Jack & Alyssa | First Anniversary Session
I’d love to tell you about our first year of marriage but I’ll be honest — it was a whirlwind. Ben & I moved apartments twice, I started a new job & was building my photography business on the side, we adopted a dog, combined families + holiday traditions, and so much more… it was amazing & exciting but it was also overwhelming and looking back, it was a bit of a blur. When our first anniversary was approaching, we took the day off and drove 2 hours to have out photos taken and IT WAS THE BEST DECISION. We held hands & talked the entire drive, we spent a few hours with our photographer and slowed down — we got to look in to each others eyes, hold each other, kiss (& not just the routine peck between hello + goodbye!) and cuddle up while the whirlwind of our lives stood still.
It’s pretty clear how much I love & believe in marriage, which is why I love shooting anniversary sessions for couples who are intentionally celebrating their marriage. Alyssa happens to be one of my dearest friends from college & I was privileged enough to take their engagement photos almost 2 years ago! When she reached out about photos to celebrate their first year of marriage & all of the accomplishments and milestones that come with that (like their precious pup, Rodger!), I was so happy to set something up!
I could go on for hours about the incredible character of these two people on the blog today but instead, I asked Jack & Alyssa a few questions that they’d be willing to share with you all about their first year of marriage:
Q: How long have you guys been married? What has been your favorite memory in that time together?
We have been married for a little over a year now; we tied the knot last Labor Day. Our favorite memory this year was celebrating the holidays with our families as a married couple!
Q: What are some qualities you admire about each other?
Jack: I admire Alyssa’s persistence and determination to be the best that she can. She’s always happy and she makes coming home something I always look forward to.
Alyssa: I admire how down to earth Jack is; I admire that he always is willing to listen to me and that he is the life of the party — others love being around him. Jack keeps me guessing and makes the simplest moments memorable.
Q. Now that you’re married, what does a perfect date night look like to you guys?
Pizza + Couch + Wine + Movie
Q. For someone planning a wedding, what’s one thing would you tell them? What is the number one thing you remember about the day you got married?
When we were planning our wedding, friends told us to be sure to take moments throughout the night to just stop and soak in the night. One of our favorite memories was simply sitting at the head table, looking around at everyone gathered together to celebrate us. The whole day flies by, and this advice helped us to truly see all of the love in the room.
Q. What was the best piece of marriage advice you ever received?
Simply to just listen to each other, let each other’s voices be heard. Communication is so important.
Q. What are some things you’re looking forward to during this next year of marriage?
